Using the bill pay method for paying bills is a convenient way to make your payments. Not only does it save you time, stamps and additional paper from billing statements, but it is also good for the environment. Many companies have opted to offer the bill pay service to their consumers not only for convenience but also for speedier payment processing.

How to Use Bill Pay

Submit a bill pay request form to your bank. Several banks use the bill pay method but require that you complete all the necessary information about the bill in order to remit payment to the appropriate company in a timely manner.

Choose the bank account you would like to use for bill pay. For example, if you would like to have the payments deducted from your primary checking account, you would enter your account number and routing number for your checking account. If you want to use your savings account, enter the information from that account.

Add the payee that you want to use bill pay for. For example, if you want to use bill pay for an electric company you would enter the company's name.

Enter the billing address found on your statement into the bill pay form. Some banks do not require you enter the address because they have a database that stores the addresses of certain businesses.

Enter the account number directly from your billing statement. The account number is necessary to ensure proper delivery of your payment.

Enter your payment amount for each bill that you will make payments to using bill pay.

Enter the date you want the payment issued. Some banks have a certain dates they submit payment; this means that if your bill is due on a Monday but your bank does not submit payments on Fridays you will miss your due date because bill pay may take up to three to seven days depending on the bank. Keep this in mind so that your payments are received before the due date to avoid late fees.

Decide if you want to have the amount you entered be set up as an automatic bill payment. Each month the amount would be automatically withdrawn from your account.

Review the information you entered into the bill pay form to be sure all the numbers and payment dates are accurate.

Submit the bill pay form and save your confirmation.
