How to Install a Cat-Back Exhaust System

Many aftermarket car parts companies produce exhaust systems known as cat-back systems. Essentially this phrase stands for "catalytic converter back" system, and means that the parts for the exhaust system are supplied for an install behind the catalytic converter (no headers or downpipe). Cat-back exhausts are made to provide performance to street driven vehicles that are required to run street legal emissions equipment. Installing a cat-back exhaust on your vehicle is relatively easy and straightforward.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench set
  • Cat-back exhaust kit
  • Gaskets (included in kit)
  • Car ramps

Instructions

    • 1

Drive the car up on the ramps and put it in park. Allow the exhaust to cool for at least 15 minutes.

    • 2

Use the socket wrench to remove the mounting bolts holding the exhaust pipe to the rear of the catalytic converter (silver cylinder in the middle of exhaust system).

    • 3

Slide the remainder of the exhaust system out of its hangers and slide the new cat-back system in place. Attach the new system to the catalytic converter with the mounting bolts and hang the new system in the appropriate exhaust hangers.

    • 4

Start the car up and take a test drive to see how the exhaust has changed the performance.

Tips & Warnings

  • Having a helper assist in mounting the rear of the exhaust system is sometimes useful as there may be multiple exhaust hangers that need to be attached at once.
