      Ask your neighbors whether they hear excessive barking or howling while you are away. Dogs experiencing anxiety may bark persistently until their owner returns.

      Take note of unusual chewing and digging behaviors. Some dogs may destroy furniture, door frames, shoes or other objects when they are alone. Check for injuries around your dog's mouth that may indicate excessive chewing.

      Housetrained dogs that begin urinating and defecating in the house when they are alone may be suffering anxiety. Some anxious dogs may eat its feces.
