Tips on how to Cruise without going broke.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Positive Outlook.
  1. Step 1

    1. An Inside Cabin will save you lots of $$$$. If you refuse to be in an inside cabin then the next most affordable option is the Ocean View Room. The type of room you choose for your accommodations can really affect the cost of your cruise. I personally like the inside cabin because when you turn off all the lights its really dark, and very easy to sleep in and take naps. Plus, most people don't spend much time in their room besides to sleep and get dressed.

  2. Step 2

    2. Be flexible with your travel times, if you can. January and September are months where cruises seem to be less expensive. And last minute deals can be very cheap!

  3. Step 3

    3. I know I'm contradicting myself here, but also BOOK AHEAD. Sometimes if you book way in advance you can get a great deal. And some cruise lines allow that if you find a lower rate after you have booked that they will match the lowest rate you find.

  4. Step 4

    4. Shop around. Call the cruise line and get a quoted price for the trip, then check with a travel agent (as long as they don't charge extra fees), and then check the online price. Check online at the cruise lines website and then other places like orbitz. Then book the place that gives you the lowest price.

  5. Step 5

    5. Payment Plans. A lot of the Cruise Lines allow you to put down a deposit such as 50% of the cruise fare. Then you can make monthly payments until your cruise is paid for. This doesn't really save you any money but it may help you to afford it a little at a time. Make sure they don't have a charge associated with the payment plan but I've done it and haven't had any type of extra charge.

  6. Step 6

    6. Stick to the food and beverages already included in your trip. Most cruise fares include tea, water, coffee, and some juices. Soda drinks can usually be purchased individually or by purchasing a soda card that allows for unlimited sodas. Be extra careful of your purchase of alcoholic beverages-they can really add up.

  7. Step 7

    7. Take advantage of all the FREE ACTIVITIES onboard. There will be many opportunities for you to buy things: photos, massages, special dinners, drinks, bingo, etc. There are many FREE things to do on your cruise. Enjoy the free entertainment available to you. These activities usually include dance lessons, mini golf, towel folding demonstrations, shows, comedy acts, trivia contests, ice sculpturing, movies, and more.

  8. Step 8

    8. Skimp on some of the excursions. The excursions can be really expensive. Enjoy the island but don't get too caught up in all of the fancy excursions.

  9. Step 9

    9. Don't use the ATM on the Cruise. Take the cash that you will need with you. The ATM fees onboard can be VERY VERY outrageous.

  10. Step 10

    10. Keep track of the towels and all the other items you are responsible for. It's not fun to get billed for things that you don't want to pay for.
