Craigslist can be an awesome site to use. However, if you have been keeping up with the news lately, you might have heard that it can also be dangerous. There are a few steps you can follow that will allow you to continue using the site in a safe manner.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Do not reveal too much information about yourself when contacting someone on Craigslist about an item or service. Stick to talking about the item or service and NOT about your personal life or interests. Any information you give about yourself may be potentially dangerous in the hands of the wrong person.

  2. Step 2

Create a separate email account for your use of Craigslist, and maybe even sign up for it with a fake name. Then you can keep your personal email for your personal life, and the other email for your Craigslist transactions. This is another step that can help to keep you safer. If you do not use your real name for this email, the person you contact will not know your real name either, which will make it harder for them to track you down.

  3. Step 3

Do NOT give anyone on Craigslist your address!!! Arrange to meet the person somewhere out in town that is safe. Arrange to meet at the police station. Make it a public meeting place, but under no circumstances should you give someone your home address. They might seem VERY nice on Craigslist, but they really might not be nice. Once they have your address, they will be able to find you and even stalk you whenever they want to. Keep this information private.

  4. Step 4

Do not give your phone number out on Craigslist! Sometimes, this is unavoidable. But for the most part, you should be able to talk via email, and your phone number is another part of your life that should remain private. It is most important not to give your home phone number out. If they have that, then they can most likely find your address.

  5. Step 5

Do NOT go alone to meet a person! Bring along a MALE friend. It would also be wise to let someone else know that you are going to a stranger's house. Let your person know the address of the house you are going to and the time, along with who is going with you. Then arrange for your friend to call you soon after to make sure you are okay. If your friend cannot get ahold of you, then they should contact the police to let them know.

  6. Step 6

Do not use the adult services section of Craigslist. There are much better and safer ways of meeting people. There are too many risks involved when using that type of service.

  7. Step 7

Stay away from hiring services from any kind from Craigslist. You honestly do not KNOW the people who will be performing the services, even handywork. There is no way to tell if they are good people or bad people.

  8. Step 8

Do not befriend anyone on Craigslist. Again, there are much better ways to make friends than on the internet.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some of these steps may seem a bit absurd, but it is MUCH better to be safe than to be sorry. You are too important to lose! So be safe!
