As a loving pet owner, it's your job to keep your home flea free, for your pets sake. But, this can be difficult if your pet spends a good deal of time outdoors.

Many times an indoor/out door pet will bring a fresh batch of fleas into the house after every visit outdoors. To prevent potential infestation of your carpets, you'll need to take rapid action.

Here are a few simple tips to help you get rid of fleas from your home and keep fleas off your pet.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

To get rid of the flea infestation in the carpets, you'll want to use the following home remedy. Combine 1 cup Diatomaceous earth with 1/2 Boric Acid and 2 tablespoons of salt and sprinkle around flea infested areas of your carpet or upholstery.

You can find Diatomaceous earth online or at health food stores.

  2. Step 2

Work the mixture into the carpet thoroughly with a broom or brush. Be sure to keep pets off this area, as inhaling could be dangerous to their health.

  3. Step 3

Vacuum up mixture after three days and your flea problem will be gone. To prevent future infestations, treat your yard for fleas with the same Diatomaceous earth mixture.

The mix will simply wash away with the next rain, but not before exterminating the fleas.

  4. Step 4

To prevent future flea infestations, vacuum your carpet on a regular basis. Discard the disposable vacuum bag after each use or else the fleas will simply crawl out onto the carpets.

  5. Step 5

Dab cedar oil onto upholstery and pet bedding. This oil will repel fleas who detest the smell of cedar.

Tips & Warnings
  • A pet who is suffering from fleas may bite their own skin or scratch repetitively. Treat the flea bite with a wash cloth soaked in cool water.
  • Apply ointment to flea bite site
  • Bathe your pet in a cedar oil shampoo once a week to prevent flea infestation.
  • Trim your bushes and grass away from walkways or any place that fleas could hide in waiting to pounce on your pet.
  • Inspect your pet' s fur thoroughly on a weekly basis to ensure that they are not infested with fleas.
  • Keep pets off treated carpet until after poison has been removed to prevent allergic reactions
  • If your pet becomes lethargic after a flea infestation, they could be suffering from anemia due to blood loss. Be sure to consult your vet immediately about the condition.
