Summertime can be hard on hair, between sun exposure and swimming. Chlorine, in particular, can dry out and damage hair, leaving it weak, dull and, occasionally, green. Products are on the market to prevent chlorine damage, or limit its effects, but swimmers on a budget and home remedy enthusiasts might prefer to use ingredients they already have around the house. With the proper precautions, even the most avid swimmer can survive the summer without destroying her hair.

Rinse your hair thoroughly with clean water before swimming. Hair soaks up the water and saturates it, so it cannot absorb the chlorinated water in the pool. As an extra precaution, work olive oil into your hair before you swim; oil repels water.
Wash your hair immediately after swimming, before it can dry. Rinse it with apple cider vinegar to wash out the chemicals. You can also stir 5 tbsp. baking soda into 2/3 cup of water, work the solution through your hair after rinsing out your regular shampoo, and let it sit for 10 minutes before rinsing it out.
Counteract chlorine's greening effects by mixing a little ketchup into your shampoo and washing your hair with it. To remove significant after-swimming greenness, work ketchup directly into your hair, cover it with a shower cap for 10 minutes, then rinse it out.
Add avocado and fish to your diet. They contain oils that help your hair grow strong and healthy, giving it a better chance of coming through the summer with its usual shine.
