Becoming a nonprofit board member can be very rewarding. The great perk of being on a nonprofit board is you are giving back to your community. In today economy, nonprofits are looking for community leaders to help them overcome the obstacles they have to run their organization. Below will help you land a position to become a nonprofit board member.

  1. Step 1
     

    Research. Find a nonprofit board of directors you will like to serve on. It is essential to find a nonprofit that matches your passion and interests.

  2. Step 2

    Ask questions. While you are researching a nonprofit, ask current board members about their experience. There maybe classes in your local area that can help you understand the basics of serving on a board of directors. For instance, the United Way of Greater High Point’s African American Initiatives has Project Board Development classes where it teaches minorities the fundamentals of serving on a board and increases the awareness of the importance of minority presences on nonprofit boards.

  3. Step 3

    Contact. Once you have found a nonprofit, contact the executive director. Express your interest in wanting to become a board of directors for their organization.

  4. Step 4

    Investigate and ask more questions. When you have given the okay to become a board member, request their monthly meeting notes and expense reports. If a nonprofit does not allow you to view these documents, this is a clear sign you should move on to another nonprofit.

  5. Step 5

    Be Aware. Sometimes people get appointed to a nonprofit board and don’t realize the responsibilities that come with the position. If your schedule does not allow you to take on extra activities, then being on a nonprofit may not be for you.

    Enjoy. Being a nonprofit board member is a great experience. You are able to connect with follow community members and leaders. In addition, your time is being used to better your community.
