How to Make a Waterproof Deck Floor

Over time, waterproof covering can wear off of a deck. Wooden deck floors should be waterproofed every three to five years. You can save money and time by completing this home improvement project without hiring contractors. The process to waterproof a deck floor is rather straightforward and something virtually any home owner can complete in two weekends.

Things You'll Need:

  • Tape Measure
  • Pen and Pencil
  • Sturdy Outdoor Broom
  • Hammer
  • Electric Sander
  • Coarse Sandpaper
  • Fine Sandpaper
  • Primer
  • Waterproof Deck Sealant
  • Paint Brush
  • Paint Brush Cleaner
  • Large Tarps to Cover Deck

    How to Waterproof Deck Floor

  1. Step 1

    Measure your deck. Write down the length and width. Calculate the square footage of the deck by multiplying the width by the length.

  2. Step 2

    Go to your local home improvement or hardware store and purchase enough waterproof deck sealant to apply two coats to the square footage of the deck. Also, purchase deck primer, coarse sand paper and fine sand paper to waterproof deck floor.

  3. Step 3

    Use a sturdy outdoor broom and completely sweep the deck floor. You should remove all noticeable debris. Take time to notice any loose nails and hammer them back into place.

  4. Step 4

    Use an electric sander with coarse sandpaper to sand off the existing varnish or waterproof deck sealant.

  5. Step 5

    Load the electric sander with the fine sandpaper. Lightly buff the deck floor.

  6. Step 6

    Coat the deck floor with deck primer using the paint brush. Clean the paint brush. Cover the deck with large tarps to protect from debris and natural elements. Allow the deck floor to dry and prime for approximately 24 hours.

  7. Step 7

    Remove the large tarps. Coat the deck floor with waterproof deck sealant with the paint brush. Clean the paint brush. Cover the deck with large tarps to protect from debris and natural elements. Allow the deck floor to dry a minimum of 24 hours. Repeat to apply a second coat of waterproof deck sealant.

Tips & Warnings
  • You should waterproof deck floor during nice weather. Plan on two weekends to complete the project.
  • Do not over-sand the deck floor creating dents and pits.
