How to Make Horse Jumps
Building a basic jump standard require some know how with power tools so it may not be an activity for everyone. The hardest part is assuring that it sits level when assembled and that the holes for the jump cups are even. The major limitation to how many can be built is time and the expense of the wood.
Things You'll Need
- 10-foot, 4-by-4 wood preferably weather treated as they will be outside
- 12-foot, 4-by-2 wood also weather treated
- 16 2-inch screws weather treated
- Wood saw
- Tape measure
- Level
- Screwdriver (preferably electric)
- Drill (preferably electric)
- Outdoor paint, color optional
- 1 or more pair of jump cups
- 2 to 6, 12-foot 8-sided poles
Instructions
-
-
1
Cut the 4-by-4 in half creating 5-foot pieces. Cut the 4-by-2 into eight 1 1/2-foot pieces
-
2
Drill ½-inch diameter holes every 4 inches along the length of each 4-by-4 section. Stop 4 inches from the top, starting 1 foot from the end.
-
-
3
Use a level in this step to assure the base is flat when finished. At the end of the 4-by-4 section with no holes, secure each 4-by-2 piece with two screws. The 2-inch side should face the ground and one end must be flush with the 4-by-4 on one side. The remaining foot is protruding to the right. The result should be the 4-by-4 standing on end with four petals of 4-by-2 secured to each side at the base providing lateral support.

Paint the standard with the outdoor paint color of choice.

5
Attach jump cups and place poles according to desired height on the new standard once paint is dry.

Tips & Warnings
When drilling holes to attach the jump cups, use care to keep them even between the two 4-by-4 pieces so that when upright the jump will be level. Use the level to ensure the base of the standard is attached evenly, this prevents tipping and prevent stress on the base that can cause loosening of the screw or breakage down the line. Use all weather material for longer life of your jumps.
