How to File a W 7

If you need to apply for a taxpayer identification number and are not eligible for a Social Security number, use Form W-7. Using this number will not qualify you for Social Security benefits and it will not affect your immigration status. Nonresidents and aliens may use this form to obtain a taxpayer identification number if they meet the requirements outlined in Publication W-7 (See Reference).

      Fill out the first section of the W-7 Form. This section asks you why you are applying for the taxpayer identification number. If you check boxes B through G, you must have a tax return to file with the W-7. Check the appropriate box.

      Enter you name now and at birth along with you address, city, state and ZIP code.

      Enter your birth date, country where you were born and the city and state. Check the appropriate box for your sex.

      Enter any information in the "Other Information" section that applies to you. Sign and date the form.

      Submit all legal documents to support your entries for birth date, name and citizenship status. Also include the tax return. Mail the form and documents to Internal Revenue Service, ITIN Operation, P.O. Box 149342, Austin, Texas 78714-9342.

  • You can have a delegate help you fill out the form and sign it as a preparer.

  • If you send copies, make sure they are certified and notarized.
