Instructions

    • 1

Add equal parts water, salt and vinegar to a large pot. Place the pot on the stove. Bring the mixture to a boil, then carefully drop in the spiny oyster shell.

    • 2

Boil the shell for about five minutes, until sediment floats on top of the water.

    • 3

Use the tongs to extract the spiny oyster shell and set it aside on a towel. Use a small brush with stiff bristles, like a toothbrush, to scuff off any debris still stuck on the shell. Work in small, circular movements. If there is sediment you can not scrub off, repeat the boiling procedure again.

    • 4

Set the spiny oyster shell in a bowl and cover it with hydrogen peroxide. Let it sit for five to ten minutes without being agitated. Remove the shell with the tongs and set it on the towel.

    • 5

Set the shell on a paper plate once it is dry. Varnish the shell to give it a clear, shiny appearance and protection from dirt and scratches. Use a medium-sized, soft paint brush to apply a thick layer of Sally Hansen clear nail polish. Let it dry.

    • 6

Lay the oyster outside to assist in drying. Once dry, cover it with a coat of hairspray.

Tips & Warnings

  • Seal the oyster shell in a well-ventilated area.
