Computers are useful for audio and video editing, especially since simple audio can be easily recorded onto a computer using basic software programs. Under Windows XP, sound can be recorded with a microphone using the operating system's built-in sound recorder utility.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Microphone
  • Sound card with a microphone in jack
  1. Step 1

Plug your external microphone into your sound card.

  2. Step 2

Click "Start," "All Programs," "Accessories," "Entertainment" and then "Sound Recorder."

  3. Step 3

Click the "Record" button, which is represented by a red circle, and then use the microphone to record sound.

  4. Step 4

Press the "Stop" button to stop recording (the stop button is represented by a square).

  5. Step 5

Save the recording. Click on the file menu, select "Save As," add a name for the audio file recording and select "Save."

Tips & Warnings
  • You can play back the most recently made recording by pressing the play (triangle shaped) button. Sound recorder will not necessarily produce high-quality sound, but it is convenient and easy to use. If you need better quality recording, consider buying an audio-editing program.
