You can paint a wood wall accent to add to any style of home décor. Paint your wood sculpture to suit a modern style with metallic paint in bold colors or paint a landscape scene on a round wooden board to hang in your French country style home. Your wood wall accent can reflect pastoral designs, colorful abstracts or painted 3-D sculptures.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Light-grade sandpaperLatex primerStencil and pencilAcrylic paintArtist's brushesPolyurethane spray
  1. Step 1

Sand your wood wall accent with light-grade sandpaper to remove any fibers and to prepare the surface to adhere to the primer.

  2. Step 2

Prime the back and the face of your wall accent and let the primer dry. Primer seals the wood and prepares the surface for paint. Prime the back of your wall accent regardless of whether you plan to paint it. The wood will warp over time if you only prime 1 side. Let the primer dry.

  3. Step 3

Place a stencil or template on top of the wall accent if you need it to create your design. Tape it in place with painter's tape and trace the pattern with a light pencil. Geometric shapes accent a modern room; a meadow with a garden swing fits in traditional or country décor; and a beach landscape suits a shabby chic design. Treat your wood wall accent like a picture or a sculpture, whichever fits best with your décor.

  4. Step 4

Fill in the design with acrylic paint. For more sculpture-like wall accents, paint the wood in bands or blocks of color as a background for objects attached to the wall accent. Create a sunset effect with wavy strips of orange, red, yellow and gold. Attach painted wooden shapes like a cactus tree and boulders to the face of your accent to complement a southwestern design. You can attach almost any size appropriate object to create a 3-D wood wall accent. Apply a finish coat of polyurethane to the painted wood before you add any object accents.

Tips & Warnings
  • Stain the background of a wood wall accent made from hardwood to bring out the grains in the wood.
  • Prime and paint in a ventilated space.
