Here are some suggestions to preventing odors from your refrigerator and keep it smelling fresh.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Don't allow food that has been there for weeks to remain in your fridge. Either eat or throw it out. It is not wise to keep on cooking food and placing the leftovers of that meals in the fridge when they are leftovers from last week. Look for cheese, milk, yogurt that has been there past the due date and anything that is moldy or spilled. These things can often bring a smell in your fridge.

  2. Step 2

Think of when was the last time you have given your refrigerator a thorough cleaning. If you have not, maybe it is time to take out everything from the fridge, clean it out, remove all shelves and drawers, hand wash them with dish soap and hot water, wipe the inside of refrigerator with dish soap, clean up any spills, and wipe all the items (jars, bottles, etc) before placing them back in the refrigerator. This should be done every two weeks or sooner depending on the size of your family.

  3. Step 3

Cut a lemon or lime in half and place on one or two of the shelves and the door as well of the refrigerator. Lemon and lime cuts any high odors and your refrigerator is left smelling fresh. Let this be something done on a daily or weekly basis. It does bring a change to your fridge.

  4. Step 4

Open a box of baking soda and place this on the door of your fridge or one of the shelves. Baking soda is known for absorbing any bad odors. Change box of baking soda from time to time.

  5. Step 5

Make sure to check the refrigerator drip pan from time to time. Odors can come from there. The drip pan is located beneath your refrigerator and can be removed by pulling it out. Unplug your refrigerator when doing this and wear gloves because if it is not pulled out for quite some time it can be very nasty. Clean it in the kitchen sink.
