1. Know upfront at least most of the household amenities you expect. Before beginning your search, what features are you looking for in the luxury home rentals you hope to stay in? Would they include maid service, yard service, personal chef availability, pet-free or pet-friendly, walk to cultural sites, seclusion, historical district, gated, views, hot tub, swimming pool, in-home sauna, concierge services? These should be listed in the general descriptions (see where to find these descriptions below.

2. Know the surrounding conditions you expect. Golf, spa, gourmet dining, taxi service, yoga, nearby university, parks, art galleries, live theatre, day camps for children. You’ll look for these in the first general description while shopping for luxury home rentals (see below), but for further information on surrounding features of a community, go to the Chamber of Commerce website of the town you’ve selected to find what your chosen location offers.

3. Start your search on legitimate, established sites that specialize in luxury home rentals. Sites such as vacationhomes.com, or beautifulplaces.com have a huge collection of well-described luxury home rentals with photos and virtual tours. You can search by location, price, and by luxury home rental type such as waterfront, ski resort, wine country, etc.

4. Avoid the scams. The National Association of Realtors (NAR -- realtors.org) is a legitimate organization which has had its name pirated by scam luxury home rentals companies. They’ll show you great photos, take your money, they may even send you a key, but there won’t be any place waiting for you when you arrive. The NAR currently doesn’t do business in luxury home rentals, so if you see an offer for one sanctioned by them, it’s a red flag. You can always contact the NAR directly through their site if you see something questionable that uses their name. But don't contact them via an address given to you by the supposed rental company. Go directly to their site and contact them from there.
