Thinking about ways to put together a fashion show?

Clothing designers display their latest collections to style critics and fashion editors in a fashion show. If produced properly, a fashion show is an unbelievable display of models--wearing intricately designed clothing--gliding down a runway to the beat of energetic music.

But preparing for a fashion show is not for the faint of heart. In fact, a successful fashion show requires months of preparation and planning, endless fittings for models and a team of fashion experts to produce.

However, aspiring fashion show producers and amateur designers can follow these steps to put together their own fashion show for fun, profit or charity.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Venue for your fashion show

  • Makeup artists and hair stylists
  • Backstage show production personnel
  • Tickets for the fashion show

Choose a theme for your fashion show. Will you show plus-size fashion or ready to wear? Sportswear or bathing suits? Furs or Raincoats? The clothes you feature are the true stars of the show. Determining the theme of your show dictates the type of clothes your will display, and your audience.

  2. Step 2

Find an appropriate venue for your fashion show. Select the meeting hall, school auditorium or theater 3 to six months in advance of your show date. Consider these four factors when booking a venue: lighting and sound needs, price of the facility, backstage, restrooms and runway areas and parking for your guests.

  3. Step 3

Hire your fashion team. Before you hire one member of your fashion show production team determine the amount of clothing changes for each model. The number of looks and changes will dictate the amount of dressers, stylists, makeup artists, dressers and hairstylists you will need for the show.

  4. Step 4

Find sponsors for your show. Make a list of vendors, designers and fashion personnel that will contribute in-kind donations or help your defray the cost of putting together the fashion show.

  5. Step 5

Create the guest, media and VIP list. Send invitations to the media, fashion editors, models, store buyers and style arbiters no later than 8 weeks before the show date. Compile your list of guests the day before the event to prevent mix-ups, ensure proper media converge and prevent unforeseen problems with the guest list.

Tips & Warnings
  • Hire a photographer and videographer experienced in live-action photography for your fashion show.
  • Designate seats in the front row of your fashion show for VIP’s and members of the media.
  • Budget no more than 30 percent of your total costs for your fashion show venue.
  • Announce your fashion show to the media using press releases. A minimum of three months before your fashion show date, pitch fashion publications and magazines.
  • Putting together a fashion show requires a lot of work, but it is doable.
