Dog toys can be expensive and some dogs manage to chew their way through them very quickly. Why pay for shop bought toys when you can make dog toys at home which will keep your pooch happy for hours. The real bonus is your home made doggy entertainment can be made at a fraction of the cost

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A length of rope
  • Old socks
  • Garden twine
  • Old tennis ball
  1. Step 1

    Rope chew toys

Those rope chew toys which are basically a short length of rope with a knot at each end can be made very simply and cheaply. Instead of paying $7-10 for each toy you can buy up to 20ft of cotton rope for the same price. Online retailers can give you a great deal. Check you are buying non-toxic cotton rope and choose a thickness which suits the size of your dog. Simply cut a length and knot each end for hours of endless fun. When it gets too chewed or a bit smelly simply throw away and make a new one.

  2. Step 2

    Ball on string

Thread several feet of strong garden twine through an old tennis ball and secure with a knot. Now you have a great throw and retrieve ball game to play with your dog. You won't lose the ball when he loses interest as you keep hold of the other end. This is great for when you are moving about for example on a walk.

  3. Step 3

    Old socks toy

Some people say you shouldn't use your own things such as shoes and socks to make toys for dogs as it will encourage them to chew your real socks. This is a decision you will have to take based on your dog's personality. Some dogs are smart enough to know the difference between their toys and their owner's precious things. Some dogs aren't. If you are going to use old socks though you can make several different shaped home made dog toys and tug games using up all those odd socks you end up with (or I end up with anyway!) Use your imagination to make interesting shapes to play with. Some suggestions include making a ball by rolling two or three socks into each other, secure with a few stitches and use for throw and catch. Or knot several socks together to form a long knotted sock rope to play tug with. You could make several long sock ropes and then fasten together with a few strong stitches in the middle to make a fun octopus shape.
