Instructions

    • 1

Make sure when you buy the tiles you buy a few extra for cutoffs and possible damaged pieces. Be sure all materials used are appropriate for high moisture environments when putting tile in a shower. Hang the "backer board" before doing anything. This will be the foundation for the tiles to secure to so be sure it is straight and level. Hanging the backer board is similar to hanging sheetrock or drywall.

    • 2

Fill all the edges and joints with caulk to form a water tight seal before moving on. Then be sure everything needed for the project is within reach. You don't want to have to go searching for something once you have the adhesive spread on the wall.

    • 3

Using the level, tape measure, and chalk line, make a rough layout of where the tiles will go. Begin by checking the levelness of the tub itself. You will want to base the horizontal lines on this or the tiles will look off-level when completed. Be sure to strike a fairly heavy line so it can be somewhat visible after the adhesive is spread.

    • 4

Using a water-proof/resistant adhesive when tiling a shower. If it is a kitchen application this is not really necessary unless doing around the sink area. Start by spreading an even amount over a fair sized area. Read the adhesive to determine dry time and base the amount you do at one time on that. You don't want to spread too much and have it start to harden before the tiles are in place. After spreading evenly with the smooth side, use the jagged side of the trowel at an angle make grooves nearly as thick as the tiles.

    • 5

When placing tiles put into place with light pressure and a little wiggle if needed. Try not to slide the tiles because the adhesive will bunch up at the edge. Work horizontally then vertically row by row. Use level and combination square to keep tiles level and evenly spaced. Repeat step until all tiles are in place. Trim tiles ass needed at joint and end areas.

    • 6

Now your ready to put on the grout. Un-sanded grout typically holds up better in a shower application. Apply grout according to the directions on the package as mixture amounts can vary brand to brand. The final step is to caulk the baseline and joints as you like.
