Step 1
Purchase a well-ventilated crate for your animal. Place the crate away from the driver and other passengers. This will keep your pet safe and all passengers safe while driving. If you prefer, have a divider installed in the car to separate your pet from the passengers.
-
Step 2
Take your pet on several short trips before going on a long car trip. This will help your pet acclimate to the car environment.
-
Step 3
Don't allow your pet to ride with it's head outside the window. Although your pet may enjoy this type of travel, you are subjecting him to inner ear damage, and your pet may be injured by flying objects while riding in this manner.
-
Step 4
Never leave your pet alone in a parcked car. On a warm day the temperature inside a vehicle can rise to dangerously high levels. Heat danger is still present even if you leave the car window open.
-
Step 5
Be sure to pack your pet's food, bowl, leash, and favorite toy. It is wise to bring bottled water or tap water from your home for your pet to drink while away.
-
Step 6
Remember to pack a poop scoop and plastic bags to clean up after your pet.
-
Step 7
Double check your pet's collar and tags to be certain they are up to date. Be sure your pet is microchiped and wears a collar with an identification tag attached. Purchase an engraved tag with your name, address, telephone numbers, and any other special information to attach to your pet's collar.
