Step 1
Use any available shade. Exterior shade from foliage, awnings, and overhangs can reduce the amount of heat that enters your home. Pull curtains and blinds closed during the day to help prevent the sun's heat from heating your home. This makes a significant difference in the amount of energy you use to cool your home.
-
Step 2
During the day your air conditioning thermostat should be set at 76. This is cool enough to stay comfortable, but not low enough to use excessive amounts of energy. Also consider raising the thermostat a bit higher at night.
-
Step 3
Insulate your attic. This is very easy to do. Insulating the attic is also an inexpensive step toward energy savings. Insulation may also be blown into walls.
-
Step 4
Change your furnace filters every month. Dirty filters reduce airflow and your air conditioner will have to work harder to keep the house cool.

on 7/5/2009 Great tips on saving energy in your home in the summer. I hate having the shades shut, but it's more feasible to shut out the heat than let in the light.
