Instructions

Grow compassion. This step overshadows all the other ones. In fact, if you can only manage one step, then make it this one! Compassion helps you to feel mercy, and through that mercy, to change your perspective. When you can see things from your spouse's point of view, then a lot of built-up resentment starts to melt away. This can almost palpably break down walls between you and your loved one.

    • 2

Communicate quality, not quantity. Yes, communication is great. Yes, we are now taught that we must vocalize our wants, needs and issues regularly in order to have a healthy relationship. However, consider that choosing your words carefully and considerately will convey respect - which outside of love - is something you both want desperately.

    • 3

Give him space. Give her space. You both need to breathe. As long as what your spouse needs for space isn't harmful to your marriage, then it can only help. If your partner doesn't make time for themselves, then encourage them to do so. If they already do get time away from you, then try to stay positive about it. Better yet, do the same thing for yourself. Having activities and hobbies outside of each other is as important as creating ones that you can do together.

    • 4

Lighten up. Getting carried away by responsibilities, outside issues, other family relationships and conflicts between you and your spouse is easy to do. Do what you can to let the burdens lessen once in awhile. Take breaks for yourself, exercise, watch some comedy (together would be great) and try to have fun a little each day. Seeing each other smile makes the problems of daily life seem less dramatic.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use compassion as much as possible during heated debates and arguments.
