How to Catch Reptiles

Catching reptiles can be tricky. Some reptiles, like frogs and lizards, are easier to catch by hand. On the other hand, catching snakes requires some skill and a bit of courage. There may be times you need to catch a reptile, especially if you want to study it or take pictures of it. Different reptiles require different techniques.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on your garden gloves and find a long stick. When catching any type of reptile, you will use it to nudge, distract or pick up the reptile. Hold the stick firmly and make sure not to drop it.

    • 2

Try to corner the reptile. Catching a cornered reptile is easier because it cannot quickly escape. Remember, though, that a cornered animal will become aggressive and may fight back.

    • 3

Catch a lizard this way: Turn the wide-mouth container on its side with the opening facing the animal. Use the stick to gently nudge the lizard toward the container. The lizard will instinctively flee if you approach abruptly, so approach very slowly in order not to alarm it.

Catch a frog this way: It is best to use your hand. You have to corner the frog and make sure there are no openings or nearby bushes where it could escape. Approach the frog slowly and grab it when it is within reach. Frogs are relatively slow, so grabbing it shouldn't be a problem.

    • 5

Catch a snake this way: Always treat it as if it were venomous and be extremely careful. Use the stick to distract the snake and prepare the sack so you can put the snake inside it immediately. Approach the snake from the side and do not make any sudden moves. While distracting the snake with the stick, prepare to grab it by the tail. Throw the dark cloth over its head, then grab the snake by its tail and put it in the sack.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always wash and sanitize your hands after handling a reptile. These animals secrete chemicals that may irritate your skin. Bacteria and mites are also usually present on the scales of lizards and snakes. When the reptile becomes too aggressive, let it go. Do not get involved in a violent struggle with it.

  • If you do not have any experience handling snakes, never attempt to catch one. Stay away from venomous snakes completely. Do not let your guard down. Reptiles can inflict a nasty bite.
