Mullein kills viruses on contact, which makes it useful for healing swimmer's ear. A couple of drops every few hours can be dropped into the ear to relieve inflammation, pain and discharge. It can be used for any type of earache.

Harvest mullein flowers from a medicinal garden. Mullein is easy to grow, and fresh flowers are best for making mullein oil.

  2. Step 2

Place your flowers into a glass jar until it is completely filled.

  3. Step 3

Use your fork to macerate the flowers so they release their oils. Don't smash them to the point that they are so small, you won't be able to strain them with your strainer.

  4. Step 4

Add enough olive oil to the jar to submerge the mullein flowers. Stir the mixture so no air bubbles appear.

  5. Step 5

Cover and put the jar in a sunny window for 3 to 5 days. Add more flowers, and let the mixture stand another 3 to 5 days, if you want a stronger oil.

  6. Step 6

Strain the mixture so that all the flowers are removed from the oil. A large tea ball works well.

  7. Step 7

Cover and store the oil in a cool place until you are ready to use it for healing an ear infection. The oil can be stored for up to two years.
