    • 1

Position the instrument. A common position is to place it on your lap. Some people like to lay it upright against their chest and shoulder. It may take a little time and practice to determine which position is best for you.

    • 2

Hold the pick in your dominant hand. Strum the strings lightly. Experiment with different amounts of pressure as you strum. The harder you strum, the louder the strings will vibrate.

    • 3

Hold down a damper button with your non-dominant hand. The letters on the damper buttons represent chords. If you hold down the "G" button and strum the strings, you are playing a G chord.

    • 4

Try the following pattern: hold down the G button and strum four steady beats. Press the C button and strum four more beats. Change to the D button and repeat the pattern. Go back to the G button and play four final beats. This is a chord progression.

Check your local music store for beginner music books. These can be piano or guitar books. They may even be called "fake books." If you are new to music, ask a store employee to help you find a beginner book that includes chords. Practice playing the chords on your autoharp. You might even try singing along.
