Windsock Craft

Windsocks are fun for children to make because there are so many wonderful designs to use. This particular craft is great for parents and children to make together or to use as a daycare craft in the spring and summer months. Keep in mind that adult help is necessary for this project.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Empty Quaker Oats cardboard canister
  • 32 to 36 pieces of yarn cut into 24-inch lengths
  • Box cutter knife
  • Acrylic paint
  • Paintbrush
  1. Step 1

Remove the label from a Quaker Oats cardboard canister. Cut away the bottom of the canister and discard the lid. This step needs to be done by an adult.

  2. Step 2

Create the top of the windsock by cutting a small slit on opposite sides of one end of the canister. Do not let the slits go through the edge of the canister. This step also needs to be done by an adult.

  3. Step 3

Turn the canister to the other end and cut small slits all the way around the bottom. Do not let the slits go through the edge of the canister. Make the slits 1/2 inch apart all the way around. Again, this step needs to be done by an adult.

  4. Step 4

Paint the canister, or let the child paint it, with acrylic paint. Let the paint dry completely before moving on to the next step.

  5. Step 5

Thread two 24-inch strands of yarn through one of the slits at the bottom of the canister. Make sure the yarn is even at the ends and then tie a knot to secure the yarn. You should now have four strands of yarn hanging from one slit. Repeat this step for each slit at the bottom of the canister.

  6. Step 6

Use another piece of yarn for the top of the windsock. Thread the yarn through both slits at the top. Join the yarn at the ends and tie a small knot. Hang the windsock outside.

Tips & Warnings
  • For extra durability, you can add a second piece of yarn at the top by creating four slits instead of just two.
  • Never let children handle a box cutter knife.
