How to Sew a Tablecloth
The trouble with tablecloths is that they're rarely made in exactly the right size, and few commercially made cloths conform just right to your personal decorating scheme. Fortunately, a homemade tablecloth has the advantages of customized size and your choice of any kind of fabric pattern. Better still, a tablecloth is one of the easiest sewing projects you can take on and forgiving of small mistakes. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Yardstick
- Fabric marking pen
- Stain-resistant fabric
- Washing machine
- Iron board
- Iron
- Sewing pins
- Sewing machine
- Thread

Measure the width and length of your table.

Add 12 inches to each of the dimensions you measured in Step 1. This will be the dimensions you need for your fabric.

Buy fabric cut to the size you need. Stain-resistant and home decorating fabrics are the best choices for this project.

Wash and iron your raw fabric.

Fold over each edge of the tablecloth fabric into a 1/2-inch hem. Press in place with your iron, and pin to hold in place.

Use a sewing machine to sew the hems permanently in position.

Tips & Warnings
If you have the time and skill, add a decorative aspect by back-stitching a pattern into the hem of the finished tablecloth.
