How to Scratch a Dog's Ear

Dogs love to be scratched, especially on and around their ears. Most dogs will grunt or make sounds letting you know how wonderful it feels. Depending on the dog, some may want a vigorous scratch, whereas others may be a bit sensitive and will only allow soft touches around the ears.

Instructions

1. Offer your hand for the dog to sniff before making contact with the dog's body. If it is comfortable with you, gently reach toward the dog and stroke its back.

2. Slowly move your hand up the back of the dog's neck and then behind its ears and begin rubbing gently. Speak softly to the dog to reassure it of your good intentions.

3. Scratch behind the ears, gently moving your fingers back and forth into the fur, but not exerting too much pressure. Be sure you do not pull the dog's ears, as that may put the dog on alert or even cause it pain.

4. Pay attention to the dog's reaction to the scratching. If the dog is enjoying the scratching, continue for a while longer before taking a break. Most dogs will turn their head into your hand or give you a nudge if they want more.

5. Offer the dog a treat before continuing with the scratching. Be sure to keep fingers away from the inside of the ear and the ear canal. as that can cause injury.

Tips & Warnings

• Some dogs groan with delight when having their ears scratched. Sometimes the groan may sound like a growl. If the dog appears relaxed and happy, don't worry about the groaning.

• Do not approach a dog and attempt to scratch his ears if it is eating. Some dogs become possessive of their food and may react aggressively.
