If you have stairs in your home, it is important to train your dog or puppy how to use them. Navigating stairs can sometimes be confusing or intimidating to a dog. Follow these simple steps to learn how to train a dog or puppy to use the stairs.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dog snacks/treats
  1. Step 1

Walk with the dog around the bottom of the stairs. Some dogs can get scared or anxious just by being near stairs. It may be more comforting for the dog if you are on your hands and knees -- that way, you aren't towering over the dog.

  2. Step 2

Encourage the dog to climb onto the first step. When it gets on the first step, call the dog back down so it can get used to the feeling of walking down. Praise the dog and give it a small treat to reward getting on and off the first step.

  3. Step 3

Place your dog's favorite treat on the second stair. That will encourage it to walk up the steps. Rewarding dogs with praise or treats will help them associate walking up and down stairs as a positive experience.

  4. Step 4

Repeat the process, going up one step at a time. Always reward the dog with a small snack and vocal encouragement.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be patient during this process. It can sometimes take several days for dogs to become comfortable using stairs on their own.
  • Be sure your puppy is at least ten weeks old when you begin training it to use stairs. If they aren't completely comfortable walking, they risk falling down the stairs, which can lead the dog to fear stairs.
