How to Install Plug Wires
Spark plug wires are an essential part of your car's engine. Bad wires can cause your engine to misfire, resulting in poor engine operation and performance. In some cases, a bad wire may lead to stalling and an inability to start the motor. To avoid this, wires should be replaced every 30,000 to 50,000 miles and also any time the wires themselves are frayed or display visual signs of wear.

1
Purchase the correct spark plug wires for the make and model of your car. You can find spark plug wires at a local or online auto-parts store.
-
2
Remove the wires from the packaging and arrange them by length.

3
Open the hood of your car and find the spark plug wires. They will be located at the top or sides of the engine block and will run all the way to the distributor cap.
-
4
Start with the longest wire (the one that runs furthest from the distributor cap) and remove it by grasping the wire at one end and pulling it out, then do the same with the other end.
-
5
Replace this wire with the longest new wire by plugging each end into the appropriate slot.
-
6
Repeat steps 3 and 4 for each remaining wire.
-
7
Once all the wires have been replaced, turn on the car and make sure the engine runs normally.

Tips & Warnings
Make sure to replace the wires one at a time to avoid a potentially costly mix-up. Most engines have clips to hold the wire in place, make sure to put the new wires into the clips to extend their life. Even if only one wire is in need of replacement, it is best to buy and install a new set every time.
Make sure the engine is off and has had at least an hour to cool before beginning the replacement.
