Adult thrush is a yeast infection which means it's also considered a fungal infection. As you may know fungal infections thrive in a moist dark environment. Whether it's your mouth, feet or even genitals the symptoms are similar and the lesions look almost identical.

Adult thrush is a common problem and can be avoided if you know what to do and what not to do. It is also contagious to others and to yourself as it can spread to other parts of your body. For example, if a person has a toenail fungus then the fungus can spread to the other toes.

Many times fungal infection is caused by a compromised immune system such as someone who has diabetes, cancer or HIV. Adult thrush may also be called mouth or tongue thrush, since it's so commonly found in the mouth.

For this reason, it's important to stay as healthy as possible. This way your immune system is healthy and will be able to fight off fungal bacteria that attacks your body. Diet is of primary concern and it's recommended to cut back or cut out sugar since fungus feeds on sugar.

In addition, if you take antibiotics it increases risk of adult thrush. However, if you eat at least one helping of unsweetened yogurt a day you may be able to avoid it. No sugar remember! Acidophilus is another great fungal fighting agent and is available at stores everywhere in dairy products and capsule form.

Naturally, the elderly are prime candidates for adult thrush, since they have weak immune systems. Consequently, they need to take extra precautions by keeping good oral hygiene, which includes brushing daily, flossing and using an antiseptic mouthwash such as Listerine.

Furthermore, denture wearers should take special care to brush and soak teeth in a denture cleaner like Efferdent or Poligrip. It's also a good idea to replace toothbrushes frequently as well as use gloves when handling teeth. Frequent hand washing is also recommended.

Women who contract adult thrush usually get it in the form of a vaginal yeast infection. To avoid this women should avoid tight fitting pants or pantyhose which cause moist conditions that yeast/fungus thrive in.

Lastly, it's also a good idea to wash only with soap and water as well as avoid douches and other irritants. Cotton panties are recommended over nylon and other fabrics that do not absorb sweat. In other words, keep the area dry.
