How to write a Two Week Notice to Quit

There are many reasons to have to write a notice of quitting letter. When you need or want quit a job, you current employer needs notice so they can hire someone to fill your place at work. Try to give at least two week notice or more. There are situations where a two week notice is not possible, but you need to notify your current employer as soon as possible.

  1. Step 1

    Why not just quit and walk out?

    You may decide later in life to return to that employer. Most employers won't hiring you back if you were a "no call, no show," or walked out.

    You need to list your employment history for new jobs. Possible new employers are going to do a background and past employment check. If you leave your old employer on bad terms, they won't give you a good reference. Many past employers won't give bad reference, but they won't say anything good either.

    You may have to work again with one of the fellow employee at your current job. You don't want to leave your fellow works in a lurch.

    You want to tell your current employer verbally and in writing why and when you are quitting. Keep everything you say or write professional and positive as you can.

  2. Step 2

    Make your quit notice professional. Put your name, address, and current phone number. Insert a date when you are going to turn it in on the notice. Address the letter to your boss or human resources.

    In the body of your letter make sure you clearly state why you are leaving. Keep your reason for quitting as positive as you can.

    For example: Don't say; "I hate my boss. So I found a new job."
    Leave out the part of hating your boss. Tell them; "I found a new job that I feel would better suit my needs."

  3. Step 3

    Make sure to proof read your notice to quit letter. Make two copies of the notice to quit letter. Keep One notice to quit for yourself and one for your current employer. If you have had major problem with your current employer, it may be helpful to send another the notice to quit by certified mail. With certified mail you have proof that you gave your current employer notice.

    It may be important to prove you gave a notice to quit for a future job or unemployment benefits.

  4. Step 4

    Your employer may decide to talk to about quitting. If you are a good worker, they may want to try change your mind about quitting. Take time to think about your true goals and what you need, so you are prepared to answer any questions. Remember do not saying anything rude or unprofessional.

  • Remember jobs are hard to find in today's Job Market.
  • Don't burn any bridges on your way to the top. They may be helpful if you fall.
