Step 1
First step is to start off with a routine and schedule. You want to establish a pattern so your baby will get used to his schedule and know what is going to happen next. Start off with a certain time every night to get your baby calm. Give your baby a bath, reading a book, and sing him a lullaby. You are soothing your baby to get him calm for the night.

Step 2
Next, lay your baby in the crib. You can play soft music if you would like and have the lights off or dimmed.

Then leave the room. Your baby will probably cry the first couple of nights but do not go in his room right away. After he/she is crying for 10 or 15 mins go in and soothe him but don't talk a lot. Lay him down again and repeat. After a couple of nights of doing this he will learn to put himself to sleep and will sleep all night.
