More and more authors are discovering that print-on-demand publishing is an attractive alternative to publishing their book ideas. Print-on-demand, or POD, is a digital printing method that allows a complete, bounded book to be published for each order. There's no warehouse and no storage costs. Unfortunately, since most big book store chains won't carry POD books, the writer must use brain power and initiative to get his or her book out there and selling.
Here are a few marketing tips.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Print on Demand provider
  • Ambition
  • Online connection (helpful)
  1. Step 1

Write a news release. Jot down information about your book like it was a news story. Use a "lead" --or introductory sentence--to describe what makes your book new or interesting. Then fill it in with other details. You can email it to reporters and editors who might be interested in it, or find a news release distribution service to pass it out online.

  2. Step 2

Make friends with independent booksellers and gift shop owners. Talk to people who own local book shops and other stores. Scout out local sections of these stores and inquire how your book can be added.

  3. Step 3

Get your friends and family involved. They may help you spread the word about your book and even pass the news onto book store owners. That's the whole point of "viral" marketing.

  4. Step 4

Add some speaking gigs. Organizers and members of local clubs like the Chamber of Commerce and social clubs, like the Elks are always on the lookout for interesting speaking topics. Volunteer to talk to their members about a topic covered by your book. (Don't make it a big sales speech, though.)

  5. Step 5

Get social on social networks. Set up pages dedicated to your book on social networks, like Facebook and MySpace.

Tips & Warnings
  • An attractive cover makes your book more appealing online. So make it stand out!
  • Some book chains will not allow books from POD providers owned by competition in their stores. Make as many non-chain connections as you can.
