How to Hang a New Door on an Existing Frame

If a current door in your home becomes damaged you will want to replace it. There is no need to purchase an expensive pre-hung door. You can save a lot of money by buying a slab door and simply replace your existing door.

Things You'll Need

  • screw driver
  • chisel
  • hammer
  • ruler
  • paint
  • Remove your existing door. This can be done by removing the pins in the hinges or by completely unscrewing the hinges from the door frame.

  • Measure your door and purchase the same size from your local hardware store. A standard door is 80" tall and the width will vary (26", 28" 30", etc.). If your door is shorter, do not cut off more them 1/8" from any one side. The removal of additional material may weaken the structural integrity of the door.

  • Use your existing door as a template for hinge location. Mark the areas where the hinges should go. The barrel of each hinge should extend at least 1/8" outside the surface of the door at its inside edge. Hollow core doors will require 2 hinges and solid doors will require 3. If your door is above 84" in height, it will require 4 hinges.

  • Use your chisel to chisel away the section of door that you marked for the hinges. The hinges should lie flush with the surface of the door when you are done. This can also be done with a router.

  • Install the hinges into the door with a drill. Be sure to drive all screws in so that they are flush.

  • Re-install the new door into the existing frame. If you removed the hinges completely, then reattach them to the door frame. If you removed the pins, then re-insert the pins. This activity will require the help of someone else to hold and steady the door as you align it with the door frame and hinges.

  • If the door does not fit properly, you may need to plane the door edges. Remove the door from the frame and use the existing door as a template and plane the door so that it is the same shape.

Even in newer homes, things may not be perfectly square!

  • Drill and chisel openings for the door knob and follow the manufacturers instructions to install.
