How to Create a Map in Photoshop

If you want to make your own Tolkien-style map, a good way to do it is to use Photoshop. The various tools in Photoshop will let you both draw the land features and add effects that will give the map that "old" look you need. The process for doing this is really quite simple and can be accomplished in only a few steps in any version of Photoshop.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Photoshop. In the dialog box that opens, make the size settings whatever you want them to be. Use the "Fill" tool to fill the layer with a golden yellow.

    • 2

Use the "Freeform" pen tool to draw in a river basin with branches spreading out from the main river. Then go to "Paths," right-click on the "Path" and select "Stroke Path." Then delete the path.

    • 3

Use the "Pen" tool to draw in mountains and other features, using the methods shown in Step 2 to "Stroke" them. Now click on the "Background" layer, and select "Duplicate." Now click the "Eye" next to the background layer. Select the top layer again.

    • 4

Select the "Eraser" tool, and make the brush a rough one. Erase the border of the image, creating a rough edge for your map. Use the "Magic Wand" tool to select the blank border; then go to "Select" and "Inverse."

    • 5

Create a new layer. Then, change the layer from "Normal" to "Multiply." Now save as a JPEG.
