Make a Logo in Adobe Photoshop

As the name implies, Photoshop is a powerful tool for editing photos. It is also a great tool for creating pixel-based graphics. Using Photoshop's text tool and the same tools used to edit photos, you can design an effective logo quickly. By following a few moderately easy steps, you can learn how to make a logo using Adobe Photoshop CS3. The same steps will apply to other versions of Photoshop; however, the commands may be in different locations.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Images for the logo
  1. Step 1

Open a new document. Select "File>New..." Enter the name for the logo in the "Name" box. Enter the size of the logo in the "Width" and "Height" boxes. Change the resolution to a higher resolution that is at least 300 pixels.

  2. Step 2

Select the type tool and type the text that will appear in the logo. Type each piece of text that will contain a different element in a separate layer.

  3. Step 3

Select the font and font size for each layer of text. Highlight the text and select the font from the "Set the Font Family" and the size of the font from the "Set the Font Size" drop-down box. To preview the font, highlight it. Then, select the "Set the Font Family" drop-down box. Press the up and down arrow to view different fonts. Once you have selected the fonts, position the text. When designing logos with text, it is usually a good idea to select either exactly the same font or completely different fonts.

  4. Step 4

Add the color to the logo. Add a new layer and send it to the back by selecting "Layer>Arrange>Send to Back." Select the "Paint Bucket Tool." Then, double-click on the "Set Foreground Color" box to select a color for the background. Click on the background layer to apply this color. To change the color of the text, highlight the text. Then, select the color.

  5. Step 5

Add the remaining elements to the logo design. To add an image to the design, select "File>Place..." and drop the image into the logo. To apply an effect to the layer, select the layer in the "Layer Palette." Then, select the desired effect from the "FX" drop box. Use the "Paint Brush," "Pen" or shape tools to add any additional elements to the logo.

  6. Step 6

Save the file by selecting "File>Save." Save the file as a Photoshop file so that you can edit it later.

Tips & Warnings
  • To follow good design principles, make sure that the logo maintains contrast, alignment and proximity.
  • Make sure you obtain any necessary licenses before using fonts or images.
