Hemmie, a CRF kitty, did well on Feline Renal Support by Standard Process

Standard Process Supplements are manufactured for humans and animals using whole foods and are sold exclusively through health care professionals. According to the manufacturer, Feline Renal Support helps maintain the kidneys' ability to regenerate and detoxify. Senior cats commonly experience chronic renal failure. The American Association of Feline Practitioners states, "The number of cats diagnosed with chronic renal disease increased nine-fold between 1980 and 2000 and now afflicts over 2 million felines, with 49 percent of cats over the age of 15 suffering from the disease."

Instructions

    • 1

Determine whether your cat has CRF. Symptoms include loss of appetite, excessive urination, dull coat and lethargy; the symptoms may creep up gradually. An annual geriatric workup is recommended for cats over the age of seven or eight since CRF can be well managed with diet and supplements such as Feline Renal Support.

    • 2

Understand the diagnostic tools. A urinalysis (U/A) and complete blood count (CBC) are important tools in detecting early signs of CRF. In a cat with CRF, the urinalysis will show protein and a low specific gravity, while the CBC will indicate an elevated blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine. Antech Diagnostics reference ranges show the following numbers as normal:
      Protein---negative
      Specific gravity---1.015 to 1.060
      BUN/Creatinine Ratio---4 to 33
      Urea Nitrogen---14 to 36
Keep in mind that once the BUN and CREAT are elevated a substantial amount of kidney function is lost.

    • 3

Learn about CRF. Since many allopathic veterinarians may be unfamiliar with supplements such as Feline Renal Support, do your homework. After all, you are your cat's advocate. Read up on CRF (or any disease your cat may have) and bring in literature regarding Feline Renal Support and other supplements that appear to be helpful.

    • 4

Evaluate Feline Renal Support. Ingredients in Feline Renal Support include Bovine kidney PMG™ extract, bovine kidney, bovine liver, veal bone PMG™ extract, bone meal, defatted wheat germ, bovine and ovine spleen, buckwheat leaf juice and seed, Emblica officinalis, oat flour, pea vine juice, bovine adrenal Cytosol™ extract, ribonucleic acid, alfalfa juice, bovine heart PMG™ extract, kidney bean extract, Strombus gigas, Tillandsia usneoides, rice bran, porcine duodenum, beet leaf juice, beet root and extract of Rhizopus oryzae grown on Tillandsia usneoides and beet root, along with honey and calcium stearate as tableting aids.

Look at additional products. In later stages, support may include subcutaneous fluids. Standard Process also suggests complementary supplements such as Feline Hepatic Support, Feline Whole Body Support, Feline Cardiac Support, Tuna Omega 3 Oil, and Renatrophin PMG.
Protomorphagen™ (PMG) extracts are cell determinants derived from specific organ and glands for clinical use. Both Protomorphagen and PMG are trademarked by Standard Process. The process was developed by company founder Dr. Royal Lee in the 1940s.
Standard Process also makes Renafood, a supplement for human kidney support that is sometimes recommended for feline use since it has fewer filler ingredients.

Tips & Warnings

  • After a discussion and examination of your kitty, your veterinarian should be willing to set up an account to order Feline Renal Support for you.

  • CRF is not a disease to be taken lightly. A holistic approach and the use of supplements such as Feline Renal Support can help with the various symptoms associated with CRF, along with partnership with your veterinarian and the regime he suggests.
