How to Raise a Shitzu

A Shitzu is a breed of dog that can be identified by its long coat, curved tail and friendly personality. The breed dates back to the Ming Dynasty and was once a pet favored by Chinese royalty. Today, the Shitzu is the ideal dog for people who live in apartments or homes with small backyards. Although Shitzus do not need a lot of exercise, they do need a lot of attention, brushing and maintenance.

Instructions

1. Raise your Shitzu in a home without babies or small children. Shitzus tend to have jealous personalities and may nip or bite small children. If you do have small children in the home, teach your children to be kind and gentle with the dog. Monitor their interactions closely.

2. Invest time in grooming. Shitzus have long coats that need constant grooming. Brush your dog's coat at least every other day and send him to the groomers for regular haircuts. Proper grooming prevents tangles, matting, and skin infections from occurring. If you are giving your Shitzu a haircut at home, be careful to avoid his eye area. Shitzus have protruding eyes that can be prone to injury.

3. Bring your Shitzu to obedience training or puppy kindergarten at a young age. Although the breed is known for its friendliness, Shitzus can get overly excited and develop bad habits such as excessive barking. Gentle and low-key training can help your dog develop good manners.

4. Bring your Shitzu to the veterinarian for regular check-ups. Even though the breed is generally healthy, their short snouts make them prone to breathing problems. Also, their long ears can become a breeding ground for parasites or other infections.

5. Protect your dog from the cold. Shitzus are small dogs that do not like excessive cold. Limit his exposure to cold weather or snow and ice.

6. Take your dog for a daily walk. Although Shitzus do not need as much exercise as larger dogs, they do need some. A daily 20 to 30-minute walk will allow your Shitzu to release pent up energy and teach him how to behave in public.

Tips & Warnings

• Shitzu puppies have a lot of energy and like to chew on anything they can get a hold of. Provide your puppy with plenty of chew toys.
