Things You'll Need:
- W-2 Forms
- 1099 Forms
- Any Itemized Deductions
- Other Relevant Records
-
Step 1
Choose an online software program sponsored by the state to file your federal and North Dakota state taxes (see References). You will need to file your federal tax along with your state tax. You can always file the federal return by itself, but a copy of the federal form must accompany the state return.
-
Step 2
Follow the link from the North Dakota government website after you have chosen one of the online software programs that they recommend you use. This is the only way to file for free if you qualify and meet the requirements for free e-filing. To qualify, you must first be a resident of the state, and then each of the programs has different requirements. Online Tax requires that be are 20 years old or younger. Taxslayer requires that you be 25 years old or younger or 68 years old or older, or qualify for earned income credit. Turbo Tax requires that you have an adjusted gross income of $30,000 or less, or qualify for earned income credit.
-
Step 3
Enter your personal information in the online form, as well as any information about a spouse and any dependents.
-
Step 4
Enter your wages and income. The wages and income section is where you will enter information about all W-2 and 1099 forms you received for the tax year. You will be asked a series of questions to determine if you have any other income to report.
-
Step 5
Enter any deductions and credits in the next series of questions. This is where you will see your refund amount start to accumulate, or see a negative balance if you owe taxes.
-
Step 6
Complete the federal error check and move onto the state tax questions. This part of the online program transfers your federal information to the state return and then asks additional questions, to see if you have anything further to add to the state return.
-
Step 7
Complete the returns and run the error check for both again. After the error check, you will be instructed to submit your taxes for electronic filing. If you have met the requirements to file for free, you will not have to pay a fee. If you do not qualify, you will be instructed to enter a debit card or credit card number to pay.
-
Step 8
Enter the information and print out or save your tax returns to your computer. Click on the submit button and your tax returns will be transmitted electronically to the respective government agencies.
