How to Read a Mini Disc

Sony's Minidisc technology uses small, optical discs to record and play back music. Introduced in 1992, it gained a small but loyal following and remains a common audio technology in use today. With the right equipment, reading and playing a Minidisc is a simple task.

Instructions

    • 1

Get a Minidisc player. Although it is an older technology, Minidisc players can still be found at some audio shops and online. Portable players are also found easily and tend to be cheaper.

    • 2

Hook up your Minidisc player. Once you have the player, you need something to listen to it through. Use the proper audio cables (usually red/white RCA cables) and follow the instructions that came with your player to hook it up to your home stereo system or computer. If you are hooking it up to your computer, use a "Y" splitter to plug the audio cable into your sound card's audio input. If you are using headphones, plug them into the "headphone in" jack, usually found on the front or side of your Minidisc player.

    • 3

Power on your Minidisc player. If your stereo is not powered on, do that now.

    • 4

Insert the Minidisc into the player. If everything is OK, the player will read and confirm that a disc has been inserted on the front panel.

    • 5

Listen to your Minidisc. Stop, play, and browse tracks using the controls either on the front or side of the Minidisc player.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't forget that the Minidisc is a powerful, versatile CD-quality recording device. Follow the instructions supplied with your Minidisc player to record music, rehearsals, concerts and demos.
