How to Install a Sigmatel Audio Driver
If you've just installed a new Sigmatel audio device in your computer, you will need to download and install the appropriate driver before it will work properly. Likewise, if you already have a Sigmatel audio device installed, you may need to install updated drivers from time to time to keep it working. Fortunately, these processes have been largely automated by Windows, but you do need to approve the download and installation of the drivers in both situations.

Installing Drivers Immediately Following Device Installation
-
1
Install your new Sigmatel audio device if you have not already done so. This requires opening your computer case, removing an existing sound card and replacing it with the new Sigmatel card. Your new Sigmatel audio device should come with detailed installation instructions that are customized for your card and computer type. Sigmatel cards and computer configurations vary greatly, so it is very important to follow installation instructions that are tailored to the exact components you're working with.

2
Boot up the computer and make sure it is connected to the Internet. Allow Windows to boot completely. If you installed the new card properly and if Windows is running on its default settings, you'll see an alert stating that Windows has detected new hardware. This alert should also ask you if you would like Windows to find, download and install the appropriate drivers. Click the "Yes" button when it asks you this, and Windows will install your Sigmatel audio drivers automatically. If you do not see this alert, proceed to the next step.

-
3
Click the Start button in Windows. Select the "Run" command and type "devmgmt.msc" in the Run window. Click the "Run" button to open the Device Manager.
-
4
Right-click the "Sound, video and game controllers" entry and select "Scan for new hardware" from the pop-up menu. Wait as Windows performs a scan for your new Sigmatel audio device. If the device is detected, you will get the same alert described in step two, and all you have to do is allow Windows to find, download and install the driver. If the device is not detected, you may have installed your new audio device improperly or there may be a defect in the device. Follow-up with the technical support department of your audio device's manufacturer for recommendations on how to proceed.
Installing Updated Drivers Long After the Sigmatel Device has Been Installed
-
5
Click the Start button in Windows, select Run and enter "devmgmt.msc" in the Run window. Click the "Run" button to open the Device Manager.
-
6
Find the entry titled "Sound, video and game controllers" and expand it by clicking the small plus-sign icon next to it.
-
7
Find the "Sigmatel audio drivers" entry under the "Sound, video and game controllers" list and right-click it. Select "Update driver" from the pop-up menu. Wait as Windows automatically searches for and attempts to install the updated driver. At the end of the process, you will either be informed that the updated driver installed successfully or that the currently installed driver is the latest version.
