Bamboo flooring is a relatively recent addition to the wood floor market. It is beautiful, sustainable and durable. Bamboo flooring installs similar to other wood floor products. Most wood floors these days have a locking system for installation. These locking floors make installation significantly quicker and easier, while allowing the floor to be used immediately after installation, with no glue to require a drying time.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tape measure
  • Chalk line
  • Power miter box saw
  • Miter box saw blade for laminate
  • Pencil
  • Bamboo flooring
  • Underlayment for laminate flooring
  1. Step 1

Measure the dimensions of your room to determine the square footage required for the flooring and underlayment. Purchase the proper amount of material.

  2. Step 2

Remove any carpet. If the floor is tile or wood, fix any loose areas. Remove screws, nails or any other protrusions.

  3. Step 3

Bring the bamboo flooring into the room where it is to be installed and allow it to rest for at least 24 hours to allow the flooring to acclimate to room temperature and humidity.

  4. Step 4

Lay the foam underlayment in the same direction you want the flooring to go. Lay only a few rows at a time, so you don't have to walk on it and damage it as you work.

  5. Step 5

Measure the width of one of the bamboo planks and add 1/4 inch to your measurement. Chalk a line at this distance from the wall you wish to start flooring from.

  6. Step 6

Use the chalk line from step 5 to ensure your first row of bamboo flooring is straight. This will help ensure all of your rows end up straight. Line up the edges of the boards with the chalk line Leave a gap between the wall and the first board of 1/4 inch for expansion.

  7. Step 7

Lay the remainder of the floor. When you end each row, measure the length of the board and cut to fit. Remember to leave a 1/4 inch gap between each wall and the floor boards. Do this on all four walls. If you have more than one foot of board left over from one row, use it to begin the next row.

  8. Step 8

Rip the final board to fit, taking the 1/4 inch gap requirement into consideration. Be sure to measure both ends of the wall in case the walls in the room are not perfectly square.

  9. Step 9

Install any necessary thresholds. Install shoe molding to cover the 1/4-inch expansion gaps you left around the room.
