Most people realize that ovulation must take place in order to conceive a child. Knowing the facts is the easy part. Predicting exactly when the egg will be released, however, is more difficult. Since the human egg is only viable for 48 hours after ovulation, you must be ready when that moment occurs. Ovulation predictor kits can help you pinpoint the moment by detecting an LH surge (luteinizing hormone surge), which occurs right before ovulation.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ovulation predictor strip
  1. Step 1

Urinate on the provided ovulation predictor stick or strips for at least 3 seconds. Typically there are instructions included in each box, but the standard amount of time is 3 seconds. If there is a discrepancy, however, go with the included instructions.

  2. Step 2

Set the ovulation predictor test down flat and wait. Most tests take 5 minutes to give a clear cut answer. It's actually best if you don't watch it the entire time. You will get a better picture if you look away and study the results only after 5 minutes.

  3. Step 3

Check the intensity, or darkness, of then reference line. This is the first line that should appear no matter what. Even if your body is not getting ready to ovulate, this reference line should appear strong in color. If not, grab a new ovulation predictor strip and try again.

  4. Step 4

Look for a line after the reference line. This one is called the test line. If you see no line here, it means your body is not going through an LH surge. If you see any sort of line, move on to the next step.

  5. Step 5

Compare the test line to the first reference line. If the reference line is darker than the test line, ovulation is not imminent. If the test line is the same shade or darker than the reference line, your body is going through the LH surge and fertility is at it's peak.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is best to have sex or fertilize your egg the day of or the day after you get a positive ovulation predictor test result.
  • Don't waste money doing ovulation predictor tests early in your cycle. Unless you know you ovulate early wait about a week. The tests are very expensive.
