Keeping in touch with Facebook friends

The social networking site Facebook is a pop culture craze for good reason. It's an easy way to keep in touch with hundreds of people at the click of a button - sort of like an instant blog for people without the time or desire to maintain one. It's easy to add a new Facebook friend, but it's just as easy to "unfriend" or "ignore" someone too. Avoid having this happen to you with these tips:

Instructions

Don't ask Facebook friends to add pointless applications unless you know they like them because they send one to you first. "Gift" applications like Happy Hour and Snowman are annoying to most people. Let's face it: a tiny picture isn't much of a gift. And in fact, these applications are a way for advertisers to spam you with a lot of banner ads and mine your personal data and those of your friends.

Use the message and wall posts the way they were intended. If you want to make plans or share personal information, send your Facebook friend a message. On their profile page, click SEND A MESSAGE under their profile photo.

Writing on your friend's wall is great way to send more public messages like wishing someone congratulations or happy birthday.

Keep your Facebook friends wanting more. If every single comment, wall post, application, group you join, and status update appears on your Facebook friends' news feeds, there won't be room for information about any of their other friends. Also, it's safe to say nobody wants to know incredibly personal information about your toilet habits or sex life in your status updates.

On the main page, click SETTINGS and then pull down to PRIVACY SETTINGS. Then click NEWS FEED AND WALL to decide how many actions you want to appear in your friend's news feeds.

Respect your Facebook friends' privacy. Don't post and tag unflattering photographs of them. Don't change your relationship status without being sure the person you were in a relationship with knows this information first. Don't mention your Facebook friends' age in wall posts if they've kept that information unlisted on their own information page.

    • 5

Keep wall posts, comments and photo captions about your Facebook friends positive. Don't use wall posts to gossip, be obscene, make plans that exclude other friends, or flirt with someone else's partner. Remember that what you write can be read by everyone else whom your Facebook friend is friends with.
