Making curtains is easy, but would it be better to buy them instead?

Curtains can transform a space, but they can also be a bit pricey. The good news is that they are very easy to make. How to decide whether it's cheaper or make or buy them? Here are some points to consider.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Complexity of pattern. If the type of curtain you'd like to hang is a complex design that would be difficult to recreate, you might consider buying. Browse the patterns in your local sewing or craft store to see if you can even find something close to what you want. If you are very creative, you might even be able to draw up a pattern on your own.

Do an estimate of time for sewing, which is anywhere from 3-6 hours per curtain (with stitching and hemming) for a complex pattern. Take the store price of the curtain and divide it by the hours you have estimated to complete. This will tell you roughly how much your time is worth. If the figure you've come up with seems reasonable, then it's worth doing yourself.

  2. Step 2

Determine the cost of material. Decorating fabric is much more expensive than standard fabric, so do some pricing at your local sewing store to see how much it would take to make the curtains yourself. Measure the length and width of the window, and calculate the yardage needed to make a window covering. Be sure to include extra for hemming, pattern adjustments, and design. Take your yardage figure to the fabric store and price out the decorator material bolts. If the cost of your material comes to close to what you would pay in the store, you should definitely buy the curtains rather than making them yourself.

  3. Step 3

Your available time. Even if you're a creative type and have the capability to make curtains, sometimes your time is more valuable spent doing something else. Consider this when deciding to buy or make your curtains. Just because you can make something yourself doesn't mean you have to.

  4. Step 4

Upcoming sales. Sometimes it's merely a matter of waiting a month or two to get the professionally done curtains you desire at a reasonable price. Sales come and go, so if you see something that interests you, ask the store if they anticipate a price reduction anytime soon. Most stores will gladly share upcoming sales info with you rather than lose a sale altogether.
