Things You'll Need:
- Groups of same colored toys or other items safe for a child to hold.
-
Step 1
Gather several items that are the same color and put them in groups. These items can be toys or any items around the house that pose no danger to a child.
-
Step 2
Sit down with your child. Point to each group, one at a time, and tell them the name of the color for the items. Watch your child and move at their pace, making sure they have a chance to study the color before you move to the next group.
-
Step 3
Next, focus on one group. Pick up each item in the group individually, say what color it is, then pick up another item, say what color it is and repeat until you have done this with each item. If your group of blue has 5 items you will do this 5 times and so forth.
-
Step 4
Move to the items in the next group of colors and repeat step 3.
-
Step 5
Do this activity with your child often. Just keep in mind that children have short attention spans. When they begin reapeating the colors after you or showing other signs that they are understanding, try giving them an item and ask them where it goes. They will need help putting it in the correct group at first.
-
Step 6
Reinforce your teaching in other ways also. You can do this by saying the colors of things that they see throughout the day. For example, you may say "I am putting you in a purple dress" or "the banana is yellow". Before long they will be telling you their colors. Be patient with them and praise their efforts.
