Clean a Carburetor on a Scooter / Moped for less than $3

This is designed to help the novice mechanic take apart his own carburetor and clean it for only a few dollars. It should take between 30-60 minutes for a beginner to do this.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Moped
  • Carb Cleaner
  • Compressed air (optional)
  • Small copper wire
  • Screwdriver
  • Rag
  1. Step 1

The first step is to identify where your carburetor is located. On the scooters and mopeds that I sell it is underneath the seat storage compartment on top of the engine. This is the most common place so look there first.

  2. Step 2

Now, we need to loosen the hose clamps that attach it to the engine and air intake. Now it should be free enough to twist to the side and unscrew the throttle cable. A quick note for all people new to this: I use my camera phone to take photos as I go so if I get confused putting it back together I can look at the pictures. Now carefully remove the rubber hoses marking each one with masking tape and a marker (I use numbers) to identify where they go as you put them back on.

  3. Step 3

Now we need flip the carburetor assebly over so we are looking at the bowl. Next we place the rag underneath the whole assembly to catch any gas that drains out and any small parts that may fall. We need to unscrew the carburetor bowl and remove it. Under the bowl there is two small screw heads looking up at you. These are the jets also called needles.

  4. Step 4

Now we need to remove them one at a time and pull them out. Using your carb cleaner spray the jet out. Also using compressed air to blow it out. If you hold it to a light source you should be able to see clearly through it. If it is still plugged then use a small copper wire to unclog the holes. Now with the jets out spay carb cleaner into the hole where the jets go. Now reistall this jet and remove the next one to clean.

  5. Step 5

Now we need to reassemble the bowl and attach all hoses and the throttle cable just like it came.

Tips & Warnings
