Create Texture With A Faux Finish

If you’re painting a room in your house and want to create the illusion of texture then applying a Faux finish technique might be the thing you are looking for. Faux finishes are not only fun to do but simple and easy. In this article I will go through a few simple steps on how to get started and below this article are links to more detailed instructions.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

The first step is to apply a base coat, usually this is some type of flat latex paint. Latex paint dries quickly and allows you apply additional colors giving you a good base to give the illusion of depth.

  2. Step 2

Once a base coat is applied use a piece of cardboard and experiment with different types of sponges. Generally natural sponges create the best effects because they are porous in nature. Most synthetic sponges will do, however they tend to make straight imprints. Play around with this and get the combination that is right for you before you apply it to the wall you are going to paint.

  3. Step 3

Repeat the process with as many layers as you want and you start seeing how wonderful and cool this type of painting can be.
As you can see Faux finishes are fun and are not contained by just using sponges, often times people will use old rags stamps etc. Once you get the technique down the possibilities are endless and are only limited by your creativity. Below are some great links to get you started with creating texture with any Faux finish.
