Step 1
Homemade graveyardSet the stage. You can buy outdoor lights and weave them along your driveway to your front door. Cut out black poster board and create silhouettes of pumpkins, black cats or bats in your windows. Create a graveyard - they sell tons of gravestones at Spirit and other Halloween party supply stores. Dry ice machines inside of witches cauldrons or your graveyard will make your invitees excited to get inside to the party.
-
Step 2
Have a vision. Before you buy any Halloween decorations, try to create a vision in your mind of how you want your place to look when you're finished decorating. This doesn't mean that the end product will look just like you pictured it, but at least you will have some ideas so when you see something similar, you can get it. Also, this is your opportunity to figure out your theme, perhaps basing this on your Halloween invitations or whether the party is just for adults or for everyone.
-
Step 3
Measure. Knowing how much space you need to cover with your Halloween decorations will make shopping quick and easy. You don't want to be guessing about whether or not the Halloween wall scenes you want to buy are too short. Also, boxes of string lights usually indicate how many lights you get and how long the string is. Having your room measurements with you will come in handy while you're shopping!

Step 4
Halloween decorations that make spooky ambiance.Buy more Halloween string lights! Because string lights are the cheapest and easiest way to create spooky ambiance, be prepared to buy a bunch of them. You can buy regular, old string lights in various colors, or ones that are shaped like candy corn, witch hats, mummies, skeletons and more.

Step 5
Think layers. Lights behind draped fabrics, sheets and black garbage bags can add tons of atmosphere to your Halloween party. Place a 3 foot skeleton or gravestone in front of the glowing fabric and now your home is transformed into a haunted house.
-
Step 6
Buy a few centerpiece items. Along with lighting, a few well-placed focal point items like a black candelabra or a plastic, lit-up skull can create the illusion that the entire house is decked out for Halloween.
